Also known as the Hungarian Pumi, the Pumi is an affectionate, intelligent, and energetic breed that loves to work and play. Originally bred as a sheepherding dog, the Pumi has strong instincts for activity and movement, making it an excellent companion for active families. Its alert expression, lively personality, and hypoallergenic coat make it a distinctive and charming breed both on the farm and in the home.

The Pumi was developed in Hungary during the 1600s as a descendant of the Puli and various European herding breeds. Though once considered a regional variety of the Puli, it was officially recognized as its own breed in 1921. The Pumi is best known for its medium-length, curly coat that gives it a unique, tousled appearance. Puppies are born in darker shades that lighten into adult colors such as grey, white, or fawn, with rarer tones including black, cream, or red with a darker mask. Their semi-erect “tipped” ears give them a distinctive, always-alert look. Agile and athletic, Pumis are well-built for herding, agility, and play.

Pumis are eager to please and easy to train, with high intelligence and enthusiasm that make them excel in obedience and agility. While affectionate and great with children, they may display herding behaviors like nipping or chasing if not properly trained—these tendencies can be redirected through engaging activities and mental stimulation. Pumis are naturally vocal and cautious with strangers but rarely aggressive. They’re a healthy breed overall, though they can be prone to patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and rare conditions like degenerative myelopathy. Their dense coat requires combing every few weeks and trimming every two to three months to prevent matting. Energetic and playful, Pumis thrive on daily exercise, ideally off-leash or in agility events. Their low-shedding, curly coat is similar to that of the Poodle, making them hypoallergenic and well-suited for allergy-sensitive owners.
