History

Goldendoodles are a cross-breed between a poodle and a golden retriever. The original purpose of the breed was to develop a guide dog that those individuals with allergies could utilize. The cross-breed is relatively new being first bred in the 1990s. They have since gained considerable popularity.

Color & Size

The Goldendoodle breed has three various coats: straight, wavy, or curly. The straight haired Goldendoodle has a coat that is very similar to the Golden Retriever, the wavy is a mixture of the Golden Retriever's straight coat and the Poodle's curly coat, and the curly coat resembles the Poodle's coat. The coat color of a Goldendoodle can range from white to golden or reddish to even black.

The Goldendoodle is classified as one of three different sizes: standard, medium, or miniature. The standard Goldendoodle will weigh between 45-70 lbs as an adult, the medium will grow to 30-45, and the mini should not weigh more than 30 lbs.

Like any other cross-breed, the appearance of goldendoodles vary from individual to individual. Different dogs will display differences in size, coat type, and color. There are three main coat types. There is the straight coat, which is flat and resmbles more of a golden retriever coat. The wavy coat type is a mixture of a poodle's curls, and a golden retriever's straighter coat. The last coat type is curly, which tends to look more like the poodle coat. A goldendoodle's size is generally somewhere between that of its poodle and the golden retriever parents. The ranges of size include standard, medium, and miniature(if the poodle parent was miniature).Upon reaching adulthood, a standard goldendoodle will often weigh 45 to 70 pounds.

A medium goldendoodle will weigh between 30 to 45 pounds and a miniature goldendoodle will weigh approximately 15 to 30 pounds. The standard in height at the shoulder for a male goldendoodle is about 24-26 inches. For females, it is 22-23 inches. Often, taller golden doodles inherit more from the golden retriever will be weigh substantially more. It is typical for the golden doodle to inherit the "golden retriever bump" on top of his/her head.

Typical coat colors include white, cream, apricot, gold, and red. Goldendoodles may also be black or a mild sandy brown. They are classified into types according to the breed of its parents. An F1 goldendoodle is the offspring of a poodle mated with a golden retriever. An F1B goldendoodle is the offspring of a poodle with an F1 goldendoodle. An F2 goldendoodle is the offspring of an F1 and another F1 goldendoodle, and an F2B goldendoodle is the offspring of an F1 and an F1B goldendoodles. Many doodle owners with allergies have seen better improvements for their allergies from the F1B golden doodles rather than an F1 golden doodle. (although both have advantages for allergie suffers)

Temperament

Goldendoodles are intelligent dogs who are easily trained. They are very affectionate and loyal to a family. They are usually easy-going but still require exercise especially as puppies.
